ONE WITH THE SEA

The Celtic legend of the selkie is known throughout Ireland, Wales and Scotland, and even Denmark's Faroe Islands, where a selkie features on their stamps. The selkie is a seal, who sheds her sealcoat to shapeshift into human form while frolicing on moonlit shores. If discovered by an enamored fisherman who takes her skin, she must follow him home to become his bride. Later she eventually finds her missing sealskin, enabling the transformation back. Sadly abandoning her children to be raised by her fisher-husband, whom she has come to love, the selkie is summoned by the pull of the tides to become one with the sea.
